A certificate of accuracy may document who stands behind a translation, but it cannot replace those checks. The right level of review depends on what the content will be used for. A short internal note and a patient-facing instruction, for example, carry different risks. ## Before translation: define what accuracy means for your project Give your provider the context they need to make sound decisions. Identify the intended audience, country or language variety, purpose, file format, deadline, and any terminology that must be used. If the text contains specialized concepts, share reference materials or an approved glossary. Ask these questions before work begins: - Who will translate the content, and what experience do they have with this subject? - Will a second qualified linguist edit the translation against the source? - Which terminology, formatting, and automated checks are included? - How will questions and changes be documented and resolved? Qualifications matter, but no single credential or number of years guarantees a good result. The translator’s subject expertise and the review process should fit the content and its intended use. ## After delivery: check the translation If accuracy is critical, arrange for an independent bilingual reviewer to compare the translation with the source. Give that reviewer the same audience brief, terminology, and purpose you gave the translator. A useful review checks meaning, omissions, terminology, numbers, names, and instructions—not just grammar. Ask for findings in an error log that identifies the passage, explains the concern, and recommends a correction. The translator or provider should respond to the findings and supply a final, corrected version. This gives your team a record of what was checked and resolved. ## Choose a review that matches the risk For assessments, healthcare materials, regulated documents, and other high-stakes content, a specialist review may be necessary. For lower-risk content, a lighter workflow may be appropriate. The important step is to decide the level of checking before the project starts, so it is included in the scope, schedule, and budget.
